Living in Bamaga

Considered the gateway to the Torres Strait, the Northern Peninsula Area (NPA) region is a narrow peninsula bordered by the Coral Sea in the east, the Arafura Sea and Gulf of Carpentaria to the west and the Torres Strait to the north. The NPA region is made up of five indigenous communities; Injinoo, Umagico, Bamaga, New Mapoon and Seisa; each with its own history, languages and traditions strongly influenced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage. NPA is a popular destination for the adventure seeker and keen fishing folk and is well known for its great camping and 4WD experiences. A trip to Pajinka, the most northerly point of the Australian mainland, is definitely a must do while you are here!

Bamaga, located on the Jardine River 850km north-west of Cairns by road, is the unofficial capital of the NPA region. Today Bamaga is home to approximately 1050 people of whom more that 80% identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage. The main language spoken in Bamaga is Torres Strait Creole, although Kala Kawa Ya and English are also spoken.

Access to Bamaga is by road or air, with Regional Express providing a regular passenger service, all year round. A 4WD is definitely recommended if you are driving yourself, or plan on getting acquainted with the local area on weekends and holidays. Local amenities in Bamaga include hospital and community health services, sporting facilities, airport, IBIS store, grocery stores and tourist accommodation.

Please note NPA is an Alcohol Management Plan community.
